The CFDA Awards presented by Amazon Fashion have come and gone. The festival kicked off earlier this week at the Natural History Museum. At the ceremony celebrities, designers, and fashion experts gathered to celebrate the dedicated work of these deserving figures in the industry.
For example, this year’s Fashion Icon Award went to Erykah Badu. Her victory is something that is long overdue. Especially given how meticulous her personal style has been throughout her career in the entertainment industry. Elsewhere, host Cynthia Erivo was stunned by Zac Posen’s dress. The Gap stole the show and provided another crucial moment for Posen to showcase his design prowess.
More fashion moments followed throughout the evening including WNBA star Angel Reese stepping into a design with Simkhai – we also loved Willy Chavarria’s Precious Lee creation (Chavarria won the American Menswear Designer of the Year Award) .
Below, check out the different moments that happened at the 2024 CFDA Awards.
Erykah Badu wins Fashion Icon Award
It’s no secret that we here at ESSENCE are big fans of Erykah Badu. The icon won the well-deserved distinction for her unabashed approach to personal style. Badu attended the ceremony wearing another ensemble from around the world by Thom Browne. Her bespoke pieces by Browne were accompanied by striking headwear.
Cynthia Erivo hosts wearing Zac Posen for Gap Custom
Wearing a custom Zac Posen design for Gap, Cynthia Erivo hosted the prestigious evening. Posen, who is killing it as Gap Inc’s executive vice president and creative director, got another big moment. The decadent creation featured a low-cut detail at the front, a hooded cape, and a delicate outline with dramatic pleats.
Diotima’s Rachel Scott wins American Womenswear Designer of the Year
Rachel Scott, the designer behind Diotima, has been a favorite of ours since she started. The designer made history earlier this week when she took home the American Women’s Designer of the Year Award. Scott is known for his great sense of style – his level of execution should not be underestimated – his Jamaican heritage permeates his intricate womenswear pieces. Notably, Scott is the first Black woman to win this award.
Raul Lopez of Luar won American Accessories Designer of the Year
When we saw that Dominican-American designer Raul Lopez won this prestigious award, we immediately thought of his seemingly ubiquitous Ana bag. It’s heartening to see Lopez pull off this win, especially since he’s coming off a recent triumphant New York Fashion Week presentation.
Willy Chavarria won Menswear Designer of the Year
The Menswear Designer of the Year Award was presented to Willy Chavarria whose name is almost everywhere this year. From Fresno, California to New York City he has made his designs deliberate and often political. This achievement was a significant moment for Chavarria.
Victoria Monet wears LaQuan Smith
Cutouts are still in according to LaQuan Smith. The designer created a head-turning black dress with a wide range of cutouts for Victoria Monet. The singer looked stunning as she hit the red carpet.
Teyana Taylor wears LaQuan Smith
For Teyana Taylor Smith designed another version of the cutout trend. But this time he was a little more sensible. Almost all over Smith’s dress, there were holes. It was a look that takes a bit of self-confidence to sport, so it makes sense that Taylor was chosen, after all she’s a fashionista not afraid to take risks.
Tyla wears Gucci
The global artist did not miss a beat. For the CFDA Awards, she showed up in memory – a Tom Ford for Gucci ensemble. The mini dress was accompanied by a pair of green clothes in black lace, this was risque but it worked very well on the Afrobeats singer. It was fun and a good time!
Angel Reese wears Simkhai
Chicago Sky’s Angel Reese was ethereal in an all-white look with Simkhai. Their blonde curls were in a fitting touch. Reese’s fur coat added a beautiful touch to the outfit.
Lee wears precious Willy Chavarria
Curve model and actress Precious Lee was drop-dead gorgeous in a cherry red velvet frock by Willy Chavarria. The dress she wore was designed with a high slit and she also wore opera gloves.
Joan Smalls plays Willy Chavarria
For the CFDA Awards, Smalls also wore a custom design by Chavarria. Instead of a dress she showed up in a velvet suit. This Smalls menswear moment was a highlight for me of all the red carpet moments.
Coco Jones Wears the Coach
Coco Jones, an R&B singer with a great voice, attended the CFDA Awards in a subtle dress by Stuart Vevers, the creative director of Coach. The piece of leather was well adapted to hug Jones’ curves. Overall, this look was great.
Ciara wears Vera Wang
Ciara is one fashionable artist we always love to see show up for events like this. She always keeps us on our toes. For the evening she wore a custom Vera Wang top in white with a long black skirt and white opera gloves – overall, her outfit was simple yet chic.
