Imagine thinking ahead that you are the pioneer of one of the biggest cosmetic innovations since breast implants – literally changing the way people around the world look and age. That’s Dr Jean Carruthers, the visionary who introduced Botox Cosmetic as an aesthetic treatment in the 1980s with her husband, Dr Alastair Carruthers, changing the face of cosmetic medicine. When we contacted Dr. Carruthers at the ASDS conference for a Modern beauty panel, we couldn’t get the chance to hear directly from this fan about what’s in store for the beauty.
1. Early Intervention to Stop Aging in Its Tracks
While not exactly groundbreaking, Dr. Carruthers has seen aesthetics change from reversing the signs of aging to staying one step ahead of them. “Botox is a foundational treatment,” she says, especially for patients in their 20s, “when the aging really starts.” By taking a proactive approach, she explains, “We’re reshaping and preserving the youth structure before those deeper lines even have a chance to set in.” Most impressive, she says, is that patients are more open about using neurotoxins to maintain their youthful appearance long-term and keep that fresh-faced look before the signs of aging set in.
2. Elastin Increase, the “Cinderella Protein”
Elastin believes Dr. Carruthers, is finally getting the attention it deserves. “Elastin is the Cinderella product in skin care,” she says. “It’s less than 2 percent of the protein in the extracellular matrix, but it’s critical to maintaining that ‘snap-back’ quality.” Collagen may be the buzzword for beauty, but she calls elastin the “neglected sister”—one we notice when it’s gone. Treatments like Sofwave, which uses ultrasound to stimulate collagen and elastin production, are at the forefront of elastin-focused rejuvenation.
3. Harnessing Your Own Cells for Personal Beauty
The future of beauty, according to Dr. Carruthers, in the power of the patients’ own biology. “Everyone should run right now and pull their hair follicles because you’re not going to get any younger than you are right now,” she says, referring to a partnership with Acorn Biolabs, a company leading the way in customized regenerative therapies . With this process, hair follicles are harvested and banked, then transformed into personalized skin and hair care tailored to each patient’s cellular makeup. “It’s like receiving a gift from your own biology,” she says, as these exosomes can be used for everything from skin rejuvenation to hair regrowth, creating a highly personalized regenerative treatment plan.
4. Aesthetic Treatments to Improve Mental Health
Millennials and Gen Z are reshaping beauty by integrating cosmetic treatments into their wellness-oriented lives, according to Dr. Carruthers. “Millennials believe in prevention and have normalized wellness as a form of self-care,” notes Dr. Carruthers, noting that this generation focuses less on “fixing” flaws and more on maintaining their natural appearance and to improve. Botox, she says, “has this amazing side effect that it doesn’t stay in the skin. We now know that it goes back into the brain and into the area of the inferior anterior end of the temporal gyrus, which is the area where we deal with pain and discomfort and anxiety.” This fusion of aesthetics and mental well-being shows and physical a new era of holistic self-care.
5. Eczosomes and Secrets to Unlocking Skin’s Full Potential
Dr. Carruthers is very excited about advances in regenerative medicine, especially when it comes to potent ingredients like exosomes and secretomes. “Exosomes are like your skin’s birthday present—they’re full of surprises,” she says, noting that these tiny “gift packages” can carry personalized compounds to the skin, stimulating production collagen, skin rejuvenation and even hair growth. With companies such as Acorn Labs developing customized solutions, Dr. Carruthers believes these innovations will open up whole new possibilities for highly personalized, regenerative treatments in aesthetics, allowing patients to unleash their skin’s full potential.
